Bike Season Officially Starts
Apr 29th, 2006 by Geaked

I love riding bicycles. I cleaned mine up two weekends ago and haven’t ridden it yet. Last weekend I was sick with a cold. This weekend is shaping up to be nice weather-wise, so hopefully I will take it for it’s seasonal maiden voyage.
We bought a bike seat for Mighty-Mo. Assembly required. That’s on my list too. Plus putting the bike carrier back on the car so we can all go to the metro park soon. MzD cleaned and waxed the car yesterday! You go gurl! That was a pre-requisite before putting the bike rack back on, because once that’s on we won’t be able to go through any automated car washes.

Here is Mighty Mo with his new helmet. Yes, he has a bike too.

If you visit a place of business which has a waiting area, don’t just assume that any magazines are free for the takin’ when you leave. Ask the receptionist if it is O.K. if you take a periodical for your long trip home. Otherwise the receptionist may through a boomerang at your head.

Web Based Applications
Apr 25th, 2006 by Geaked

Ever so slowly the WWW is being used to store data and execute software functions. Some believe this represents a new wave of software use. Store your data online and use programs from any computer that is connected to the internet. Although many companies will charge for usage, many of them are currently free.

Here are a few.

Flash Earth
http://www.flashearth.com/
Although very slow on a dial-up connection, and not sanctioned by Google or Microsoft, the GUI has a nice simple intuitive feel. If you can’t get Google Earth to work for you, or you’re on a different computer trying to zoom in on your ex-girlfriend’s new digs, this might be for you.

WebNotes
http://www.aypwip.org/webnote
This is a very simple note taking system that assigns you a URL after a quick registration. Easy to share notes if you share your URL. No security is set up, so anyone with your notes web address can see your notes. But this is very handy if you are switching PC’s or browsers often. Great for saving web snippets without having to open a software program. Look at the “Hints” page for a list of functionality. A good place to start if you’re new to this genre.

BackPackit
http://www.backpackit.com
Sign up is quick and easy and they give you enough functionality in the free version to really get a feel for how much you’ll use the program (pay versions offer file sharing, more storage, use of photos, etc.) Create lists, Notes, add pages, edit on the fly, determine who you want to share your info with, and set up notifications to your email or SMS to your cell phone. All of this from any PC with an internet connection and a browser.
It’s a great way to share info with others (several family members can edit a central grocery list) and there are great examples of how people are using this application at their site.

This is my app of choice currently. I’ll even share my Web Apps List I created there with you:

Plan 59

RETRO DESIGN • 1950s CAR ART • ARCHITECTURE • CLASSIC TRUCK ART • WWII ART • LARGE-FORMAT PRINTS

Came across a great website link over at Weblog Tools Collection that shows how a specific genre or theme can work wonders with the right design concept.

Look through these classic car pics taken from brochures and early magazine ads and save the high resolution pics to your desktop.

If you want to read about whats going on behind this site and syndicate it, then go here: http://www.plan59.com/blog.htm

If you are a baby boomer and actually rode around in one of these as a kid, you can order prints or T Shirts from this site and proudly tell the world you rode in the original.

I particularly like the gallery of ‘demonic tots’, depicting overly eager kiddies with a certain ‘look’ in their eyes…

Gas Prices: Research Before You Buy
Apr 20th, 2006 by Geaked

There are enough filling stations in metro areas that the convenience of topping off our tanks usually finds us pulling into whichever station is closest. But with $3.00 per/gallon average prices looming over most of the country, it’s in our best interest to research local pump prices before we turn the key. When a difference in pennies might not have turned our heads a year ago, common ‘cents’ is now driving car owners to the lowest pump price – and scheduling our trips around these savings.

The demand for this information has also sprouted several gas station comparison websites. Type in your Zipcode and zero in on that gas ‘n go station across town. Keep in mind that these sites rely on visitors like you and I to send in current, up-to-date prices. So help others out if you see that bargain price by submitting info.

Below is a short list to start with. By no means comprehensive, it will give you an idea of how this works.

http://autos.msn.com/partners/sponsorpage.aspx?page=gas
(after entering zip code, you get a map of the area with numbered locations of stations. Scroll down the page and a ‘key’ corelates that number with detailed info about that location.)

(not my favorite, too many adds – too cluttered)

http://www.automotive.com/gas-prices/
(typically the one I utilize)

And finally, if you are confused about how this whole gas price thing works, here is a comprehensive article that should shed some light on the subject and make you sound really smart next time you are at the water cooler.

How gas prices work:

What was the last price you paid at the pump? Have another link to share? I’ll add it to the list!

Mr. Manners on: Waiting Rooms
Apr 18th, 2006 by Geaked

When you visit a place of business that has a lobby or a waiting room and you are having a conversation with an employee, don’t put your foot up on the table. Better yet, don’t put your foot on top of the magazines that are on top of the table.

This way you will avoid my urge to tackle you and then cover your unconcious body with foot print covered magazines.
