New photos uploaded
Aug 16th, 2005 by Geaked

I had some shots that were stored on the internal memory of my digital camera. These are pictures I took without the removable memory card installed. I hate Kodak’s software for transferring pictures to my PC, so I use a third party program. The long and short of this is it’s a pain in my back-side to extract pictures from the camera’s memory. I finally found a work around today and found some shots I had forgotten about. I’ve uploaded these to my photo gallery along with a couple of shots from our visit to Indiana.

Here is a shot of the southwestern sky from our old apartment taken a few months ago.

Fletcher Road UFO
Aug 14th, 2005 by Geaked

K-ma just came in and told me there was a big ‘ol moon in the southern sky. I decided to take the camera out to experiment. I set it on a 4 second shutter delay and took this shot…(mind you, it’s 9:15pm EST, and dark outside.)

Looks like the sun...but it's the moon.

Then I took this shot of a car coming down the road. Same shutter speed. Looks like a low flying UFO…

Yowza! UFO! UFO!

Odd things to say…

Toothpaste for dinner. Drawings and T-shirt designs for those of us a bit “off-center”. My favorite T-shirt slogan is: “if i had dollar for every time i had 60 cents, i would be Canada.”

Mz.D and I used to keep profound quotes (of our own) on the fridge in Evanston. We had scralled them on napkins, scraps of paper, post-it notes, whatever we could find at the time – knowing if we didn’t historically record that creative spewage – it would be lost forever. Unfortunately we lost all of those scraps of paper when we moved about three times ago. There was one time when Mz.D was standing in the kitchen and I noticed that both of her hands were clentched in fists at her side. Not a normal fist, mind you, but that kind of fist kids make where they cover their thumbs with their fingers. I said to her, “Why do you make a fist that way – with your thumbs covered?”

Her immediate answer (as if she had been asked this a thousand times) was: “Other creatures are jealous of opposable thumbs.”

This became a fridge quote.

In fact Mz.D just found a small spiral notebook where we had penned some of these one-offs along with grocery lists.

A couple entries from this frayed (read: ‘fraid) archive are:

“The closet of ‘good taste’ has a lock on it.” – Sam

“Who does the dishes at The Last Supper?” – Sam

And in an effort to come up with that ultimate Rap Duo name we decided on: “Ice Col’ Milk and M.C. Low-Phat” Evidently we wanted to represent the National Dairy Council.

So pay attention to your friends and family and promote creative spewage! Write it down and display it proudly on a fridge near you! Who knows, maybe it will appear on a T-Shirt.

Tag-Be-Gone
Aug 5th, 2005 by Geaked

I hate garment tags. Specifically the tags sewn into the neckline of shirts. My wife chides me about this. She hands me the scissors when I unpackage a shirt knowing me all to well.

I have no use for them:

* I know what size I wear.
* I don’t care who the manufacturer is.
* I don’t need to know how to wash or dry it.
* I could give a flip if it was made in India, Indonesia, or Indiana.
* Tags are usually sewn into the fabric all willy-nilly and made of scrap pieces of emery cloth causing a nagging, itchy-skritchy feeling every time you turn your head.
* I feel good eliminating shirt tags, much like I do muting commercials and idiotic spokes-people on T.V. (or radio).

Baby clothing takes the cake. Sometimes three tags deep, these itsy-bitsy sleepers, rompers, shirts, body-suits, WHATEVER, have the largest tags in relation to the garment size. EVER.

I once went through Mighty Mo’s clothes wielding a pair of Singer scissors (only the best, mind you) and came away with a large handful of manufacturer propaganda! I can’t keep up as his wardrobe changes, as each bite of Gerber ‘Beef and Gravy’ moves him to a new size.

I hope to someday teach my son that he too can wield the mighty power of the scissors. This will ensuring future generations live tag free and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a ‘no-nag-neck’ shirt.

Until then, he is immersed in the labels that hang from the side of his activity mat. No other toy will do. I have my work cut out for me.

Nanotech kills cancer cells
Aug 4th, 2005 by Geaked

From the BBC News:

Nanotechnology has been harnessed to kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

The technique works by inserting microscopic synthetic rods called carbon nanotubules into cancer cells.

When the rods are exposed to near-infra red light from a laser they heat up, killing the cell, while cells without rods are left unscathed.

Nice breakthrough research from Stanford. Only in a testube for now. I’m thinkin’ ’bout the possibilities for cleaning out that gas line in the ol’ Ford Farcus! Or how about some self-cleaning lotion pump bottles…you know, when that dried up glob forms at the tip? Send in some nanotubes and never again have your Burt’s Bees Milk and Honey lotion explode on you! Am I giving away too much info here? The applications are endless!

JustBlogIt
Aug 1st, 2005 by Geaked

I’ve switched my browser over to FireFox. I found Portable FireFox (and Portable Thunderbird) which are scaled down versions able to be run from a thumb drive ( removable USB ). This allows me to carry all of my browser settings, skins, extensions, address book, etc., with me from computer to computer. The thing I like about Firefox is the ability to scale functionality with a large array of available extensions.
I discovered an extension called JustBlogIt that adds a right click menu option, that once configured, opens a new window to your blogging program. It then copies the URL and any text you have highlighted. It’s a small, simple program that does what it says. I’m using it in this post for the first time. The info in blog quotes below was captured from their website. If you blog, and use FireFox (won’t work in I.E.), go check it out.

…more importantly, JustBlogIt supports seamless posting from within many web-based News Readers. JustBlogIt checks to see if you are trying to post from a News Reader and adapts the blogging data accordingly.
What weblog types are supported by JustBlogIt?
Blogger, Drupal, LiveJournal, Movable Type, Radio Userland, TextPattern, TypePad, WordPress, journalspace, b2evolution and BLOG:CMS. Plus you can add any weblog type you want through the Custom… setting.
Which News Readers does JustBlogIt recognize?
Bloglines, Rojo, Radio Userland and Amphetadesk.
